Lot 385
Description
Georges Antoine Rochegrosse,
French 1859-1938-
The Lyre Recital;
oil on canvas, signed and dated 'G.M. Rochegrosse / 1923' (lower left), 76.5 x 110.4 cm.
Provenance:
with Whitford & Hughes, London.
Note:
Rochegrosse studied in Paris under Jules Joseph Lefebvre (1836-1911) and Gustave Boulanger (1824-1888), experiences which undoubtedly influenced the dramatic Classical and mythological scenes which became typical of his oeuvre. He regularly exhibited his monumental paintings in the Paris Salon, and won the Prix du Salon in 1883, at the age of 24, for his 'Andromaque', which is now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen. The present work is a characteristic example of the artist's lavish, richly-decorated interior scenes, recalling, for example, his depiction of 'Dancers and musicians in the atrium' which sold at Christie's, London, on 9 June 2011, lot 139 (£27,500), and his 'La Toilette', set in a similar tiled interior, which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 15 October 2002, lot 172 (£17,925).
