Lot 387
Description
Frederik Hendrik Kaemmerer,
Dutch 1839-1902-
The Hoop Girl;
oil on canvas, signed and dated 'FH KAEMMERER 1860' (lower right), 81 x 54.1 cm.
Note:
Kaemmerer was a prolific and versatile painter whose oeuvre spanned the Academic approach of his early works, influenced by his studies at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904), through to the looser, more Impressionistic style which he developed later in his career.
The present work is almost identical in composition, except for the evident difference in the sitter's costume, to a painting by Kaemmerer entitled 'Baile de máscaras' in the collection of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires [2901]. The painting also recalls similar scenes of elegantly-dressed figures by Kaemmerer, such as those which sold at Christie's, Amsterdam, on 16 November 2016, lot 271 (€25,000), and at Bonhams, New York, on 25 April 2012, lot 41 ($40,000).
