Description
William Strutt, RBA FZS,
British 1825-1915-
Attacked by Lions;
oil on canvas, signed 'William Strutt' (lower right), 233 x 173 cm.
Note:
Strutt was a member of an artistic dynasty, as the son of William Thomas Strutt (1777-1850), and grandson of Joseph Strutt (1749-1802). He joined the atelier of Michel Martin Drolling (1786-1851) in Paris in 1838, before enrolling in the École des Beaux-Arts in the following year. He travelled to Australia in 1850, and produced a number of paintings inspired by the landscapes and scenes he encountered there and in New Zealand, including the 'Black Thursday' bushfires of 1851, before returning to England in 1862. Indeed, Strutt was one of the first artists to produce large-scale history and religious paintings in Australia, such as his depiction of 'David's first victory', in the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, which exhibits the finely-painted, academic approach which is also evident in the present work.
