Lot 377
Description
Antoine Chintreuil,
French 1814-1873-
Sunset at sea;
oil on canvas, signed 'Chintreuil' (lower right), 33.1 x 54.1 cm.
Provenance:
John Lishawa, London.
with Crawley and Asquith, London.
Note:
This present work was likely executed in either 1869 or 1872 when Chintreuil was known to have stayed in Boulogne. A similar small canvas was exhibited at the National Gallery of Scotland in the exhibition 'Lighting Up The Landscape' in 1986 (lent by the Kunsthalle, Bremen no.42).
This is a particularly atmospheric example of Chintreuil's Impressionistic landscapes, often illuminated by the evocative light of a setting sun, such as in his 'Les vapeurs du soir', in the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille [P 534], and his 'Pluie et soleil' in the Musée d'Orsay [RF 414]. Similar works include his paintings which sold at Artcurial, Paris, on 13 November 2018, lot 101 (€5,200), and at Piasa, Paris, on 26 June 2009, lot 92 (€9,666).
