Lot 375

Description

James Baker Pyne, RBA,
British 1800-1870-

River landscape near Windsor, with the castle in the distance;

oil on canvas, signed 'PYNE' (lower right), 27 x 37.2 cm.

Provenance:
with Thomas Agnew & Sons, London [no.38736].

Note:
In his early years, Pyne was a member of the Bristol School of artists and a close follower of Francis Danby (1793-1861). From 1835 onwards, he travelled extensively on the Continent, gathering material to work up into finished pictures. The present work has been executed with the light colour palette, which was typical of Pyne's paintings, effectively imparting the scene with a sense of warmth, bright sunlight.
