Lot 363
Description
After William Frederick Measom,
British 1813-1887-
The Earl of Cardigan leading the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava;
pencil and watercolour on paper, 54.2 x 38.4 cm., (unframed).
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work appears to be after an engraving by Measom, produced for John Cassell's 'Illustrated History of England'. It depicts James Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan (1797-1868), leading the disastrous charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War, in 1854, an encounter which was immortalised in Alfred Lord Tennyson's 'Charge of the Light Brigade' written in the same year.
