Lot 356

Description

Henri-Joseph Harpignies,
French 1819-1916-

View of mountains at sunset;

black chalk and watercolour on paper, signed 'h harpignies' (lower left), 24 x 39.1 cm.

Provenance:
with Abbott & Holder, London.
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Alongside his close friend Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796–1875), Harpignies emerged as a leading figure within the Barbizon School. The striking colours of the present work, effectively evoking a sense of the setting sun in a hazy evening sky, render the present scene particularly atmospheric.
