Lot 352

Description

Charles Edward Dixon, RI,
British 1872-1934-

Below Greenwich;

pen, ink, and watercolour heightened with white on paper, signed, dated, and inscribed 'Below Greenwich / Charles Dixon / 1900' (lower right), 54 x 36.8 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Charles Edward Dixon was the son of the genre painter Alfred Dixon (1842-1919). He worked principally as a marine artist, with many of his works now held in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, and also produced a number of illustrations for publications which included the Illustrated London News, the Graphic, and the Sphere. The present work effectively conveys the traffic and bustle of the River Thames towards the end of the 19th century, when it was still central to the transportation of goods across London and further afield.

This work recalls a strikingly similar composition, of comparable dimensions, which sold at Bonhams, London, on 18 October 2017, lot 19 (£5,250).

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

VAT
VAT is not charged on the hammer price unless it is stated that there is 'VAT applicable on the hammer price at the end of the description. Buyer's premium is subject to VAT.
