Lot 345
Description
Attributed to Thomas Grant,
British fl.1868-1879-
West Bow, Edinburgh: The Condemned Covenanters on Their Way to Execution;
oil on canvas, 92 x 71.5 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
A painting on panel of the same composition is housed in the City of Edinburgh Council [no.HH383/1904]. This has [very likely] been misattributed to Thomas Allom (1804-1872) and is presumably a copy by an unknown hand, after the present work.
The scene depicts James Renwick (1662-1688) being led to his execution in the Grassmarket in 1688, in anticipation of the Glorious Revolution. Renwick was the last of the Scottish Covenanters to be executed, for their rejection of royal authority due to the limits placed on the freedom of worship of Presbyterians.
Another painting by Thomas Grant entitled 'View of Edinburgh from Carlton Hill' sold at Christie's, London, on 11 September 2009, lot 202 for £8,125
