Lot 339
Description
Louis Willem van Soest,
Dutch 1867-1948-
Dutch landscape with windmills beside a river, under stormy skies;
oil on panel, signed and dated 'Louis v Soest / '86' (lower right), bears inscription 'LV Soest / 86' verso, 29.1 x 40.6 cm.
Provenance:
Collectie Randag, 's-Hertogenbosch, No. 98-1972.
Note:
Van Soest was active in the Veluwe region of the Netherlands, and worked in the circle of contemporaries Edzard Koning (1869-1954) and Jan van Vuuren (1871-1941) who, like van Soest, embraced an evocative, Impressionistic approach to landscape painting.
Indeed, the present work is a characteristic example of van Soest's atmospheric landscapes, featuring a typically Dutch silhouette of windmills against storm clouds which brew threateningly overhead.
