Lot 332

Description

William Raymond Dommersen,
British 1850/59-1927-

Boats on still water, with a view of Venice in the distance;

oil on canvas, signed 'W R Dommersen' (lower left), bears printed label inscribed 'W.R. DOMMERSEN. / Landscape, with boats, figures, etc., with a view of / Venice in the Distance (a signed work)' attached to the upper stretcher bar, 30.6 x 40.9 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
William Raymond Dommersen was the son of the painter Pieter Cornelis Dommersen (1833-1918), and nephew of Cornelis Christiaan Dommersen (1842-1928), also a painter. His output consists almost exclusively of landscapes and marine scenes, the compositions of which, with low, flat horizons punctuated by masts and sails, gesture towards the strong influence of earlier Dutch landscape artists Jacob van Ruisdael (1628-1682) and Jan van Goyen (1596-1656).
Other works by Dommersen include a similarly tranquil view of a boat in an estuary in the collection of Pembroke College, Cambridge [PD0143], and a more dramatic view of 'Schiedam on the Scheldt' which sold at Bonhams, London, on 3 March 2021, lot 123 (£1,658).
