Portrait of a man, standing half-length in a landscape, holding a shillelagh;
oil on panel, signed 'C H Cook.' (lower left), 35 x 29 cm.

Note:
The present work is a charming example of the figure studies and scenes of rural Irish life which make up much of Cook's oeuvre. Dating to c.1860, it was likely conceived when Cook was still working in and around Cork.
Similar works by the artist include his paintings which sold at Morgan O'Driscoll, Co. Cork, on 30 November 2021, lot 149 (€3,200 hammer), and at Morgan O'Driscoll, Dublin, on 25 April 2016, lot 144 (€4,300 hammer).

Qualifying living artists and the descendants of artists deceased within the last 70 years are entitled to receive a re-sale royalty each time their work is bought through an auction house or art market professional.
It applies to lots with hammer value over £1,000 as follows:
0 to £50,000 - 4%
£50,000.01 to £200,000 - 3%
£200,000.01 to £350,000 - 1%
£350,000.01 to £500,000 - 0.5%
Exceeding £500,000 - 0.25%
ARR is capped at £12,500

Export of goods
