Lot 312

Description

Ernest Spence,
British fl.1884-1913-

Portrait of a girl, bust-length, wearing a hat with a purple sash and a brown coat;

oil on canvas, bears canvas stamp for 'G. ROWNEY & CO' verso, bears old label inscribed 'no 2 Portrait of a girl / Ernest Spence / One Tree Corner / guildford' attached to the frame verso, 46.1 x 35.6 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Spence exhibited at the Royal Academy (1884-1905), the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and elsewhere over the course of his career. The present work is a charming example of the artist's sensitively-painted portraits, with the sitter's confident gaze imparting the work with a striking sense of presence, as in a full-length portrait by Spence which sold at Bonhams, London, on 21 November 1996, lot 165 (£4,600 hammer).
