Lot 305

Description

William Paddock,
British 1871-1925-

Portrait of Margery Macfarlane, seated full-length, wearing 19th-century dress;

oil on board, inscribed 'Margery Macfarlane / age 19 1922 / Costume 1822' verso, bears label for 'William Paddock / 24 Olive Road: Cricklewood. / London. N.W.2. / 1 Mrs W. Paddock.' attached to the reverse of the frame, 46 x 30.3 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Paddock's quiet, introspective portraits were heavily influenced by the work of James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) and William Strang (1859-1921). Paddock's approach is exhibited effectively in his portrait of the novelist Thomas Hardy (1840-1928), to whom he was introduced by Strang, as well as in numerous portraits of the artist's family members, some of which were exhibited at the Royal Academy.

Paddock served as the Senior Art Master at Glasgow High School, before taking up the same position at University College School, London, which he held from 1905 until his death in 1925.
