Lot 303

Description

Circle of Tom Roberts,
British / Australian 1856-1931-

Study of a an Aboriginal man, shoulder-length, with long hair and a beard;

oil on unstretched canvas, oval, 24.6 x 19.3 cm., (unframed).

Note:
Tom Roberts painted portraits of indigenous Australians between 1889 and 1895. The present work very much recalls these portrait types, with the sitter unclothed which likely suggests that he is from the north of Australia.

For a similar work by Roberts, see his portrait of Charlie Turner in the Art Gallery of New South Wales [no.664].
