Lot 301
Description
Circle of Edgar Degas,
French 1834-1917-
Portrait of a gentleman with a beard, bust-length, wearing a brown jacket;
oil on canvas, 53.5 x 43.8 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work is highly reminiscent of Degas' portraits, painted with loose and flowing brushstrokes which lend a palpable sense of immediacy and presence. These include Degas' portrait of Henri Rouart (1833-1912), with a sitter which bears a striking resemblance to the subject of this work, as well as his 'Portrait of a Man' in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston [48.532].
