Lot 293

Description

James Sant, RA,
British 1820-1916-

Distant memories;

oil on canvas, in painted oval, signed with monogram (centre right), 76.2 x 63.5 cm.

Provenance:
with Cambridge Fine Art, California.
Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 16 June 2010, lot 188.
Private Collection, UK.

Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 17 March 2022, lot 93 (£6,930).
Private Collection, New Zealand.

Note:
James Sant studied under John Varley (1778-1842) and Augustus Wall Callcott (1779-1844), before attending the Royal Academy Schools in London. He was the last artist to serve as the 'Principal Painter in Ordinary' to Queen Victoria, having been appointed in 1871 after painting portraits of Prince Leopold and Princess Louise which are now in the Royal Collection [RCIN 404258 and RCIN 404995]. The present work is a charming example of the artist's romanticised portraits of enigmatic female sitters, and recalls, for example, his 'Reverie' which sold at Bellmans on 12 October 2021, lot 184 (£7,000 hammer), and his 'Portrait of a young girl' which sold at Woolley & Wallis on 8 September 2020, lot 643 (£5,000 hammer).
