Lot 289
Description
Circle of Jean-Jacques Henner,
French 1829-1905-
Study of a woman, seated, wearing a colourful blanket;
oil on panel, bears indistinct signature 'HENNER' (upper right), 21.6 x 15.6 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Henner studied in Paris, first under Neoclassical painters Michel Martin Drolling (1786-1851) and François-Édouard Picot (1786-1868), and later at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he won the Prix de Rome in 1858. He went on to enjoy great success amongst contemporaries, exhibiting regularly at the Salon, with a number of his paintings subsequently purchased for the collection of the Musée d'Orsay. Henner was best known for his highly atmospheric nudes and enigmatic portraits, typically, like the present work, executed with a characteristically dark and rich colour palette of blacks and reds. The composition of the present work, with the gently curving lines created by the sitter's hunched position, recalls Henner's painting of the 'Penitent Magdalene' which sold at Dobiaschofsky Auktionen in Bern on 9 May 2025, lot 346 (£3,525 hammer), and his depiction of Mary Magdalene which sold at Ahlers & Ogletree Auction, Atlanta, on 13 September 2024, lot 445 ($22,500 hammer).
