German 1842-1915-
The temple at Luxor, with two figures carrying water;
oil on canvas, signed 'P Meyerheim' (lower left), further signed with initials, inscribed, and dated 'PM / Luxor / 5.2 / 1893' (lower right), 42.1 x 54.1 cm.
Provenance:
The estate of the artist;
Thence by descent.
Exhibited:
Berlin, Glaspalast, 'Große Berliner Kunst-Ausstellung', 1895, cat. no.1181.
Munich, Glaspalast, 'Munich Annual Exhibition', 1899, cat. no.690.
New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 'Exhibition of Contemporary German Art', 1909.
Note:
Meyerheim studied at the Prussian Academy of Arts between 1857-60, and there went on to become a Professor in 1887. The present work is a striking departure from the animal paintings for which he is best known. In this striking scene, the artist's accomplished handling, at once seemingly spontaneous and delicate, is characteristic of his approach, and very much illustrates his prodigious skill as a painter. His use of light, bright blues effectively evokes the warm sunlight of the scene, from which the viewer is shielded by the monumental walls of the ancient temple, which also casts a shadow on the figures below.
