Lot 282

Description

Francesco Maestosi,
Italian 1822-1883-

View of the Saturn Room in the Pitti Palace, Florence;

oil on canvas, signed 'F Maestosi' (lower left), inscribed 'Via S. Maria 21 / Firenze / Maestosi Fortunato' verso, bears further indistinct inscriptions and an indistinct Florentine gallery stamp verso, 90.6 x 120.8 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Maestosi produced a number of strikingly similar paintings, meticulously documenting the interiors of the Saturn Room, and the neighbouring Iliad and Jupiter Rooms, in the Pitti Palace, Florence, from various different angles. In the present work, the viewer's gaze is directed through the door on the right, in the middle of the southern wall, into the Jupiter Room, coming to rest on the statue of Victory by Vincenzo Consani (1818-1887) within. The present view depicts the arrangement of the pictures as they were in the mid to late 19th century, with Raphael's Madonna della Seggiola later being replaced with Titian's Portrait of Julius II, which hangs in the space today. An almost identical view of the Saturn Room by Maestri, of the same dimensions as the present work, sold at Tajan, Paris, on 13 December 2005, lot 54 (€25,897), whilst another o
ne of Maestosi's views of the Iliad Room is in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art [85.7].
