Lot 279
Description
Henry Murch,
British 1824-1890-
Santa Maria in Cosmedin with the Fonte dei Tritoni, seen from the Temple of Hercules Victor, Rome;
oil on canvas, signed with initials 'HM' and dated '1854' (on the steps, lower centre), signed and inscribed 'Henry Murch / 17 Via Gregoriana / Rome' verso, 54 x 68.9 cm.
Note:
The present work is characteristic of Murch's architectural scenes, with small, brightly-dressed figures dwarfed by the scale of the buildings and ruins which surround them. Indeed, Murch's treatment of this scene recalls his painting of Temple of Vesta at Tivoli which sold at Finarte, Rome, on 21 February 2007, lot 240 (€14,880).
The circular structure depicted to the right of the composition is the ancient Roman Temple of Hercules Victor, with the 8th-century Basilica di Santa Maria in Cosmedin situated behind the Baroque Fonte dei Tritoni, commissioned by Pope Clement XI in the early 18th century. This fountain obscures a view of the Bocca della Verità on the portico of the church.
