Lot 286

Description

Attributed to Paul Jourdy,
French 1805-1856-

Homer Singing His Iliad at the Gate of Athens;

oil on canvas, 21.5 x 27.4 cm.

Provenance:
Anon. sale, Bonhams, London, 23 May 2001, lot 12.
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present work is likely a preparatory sketch for Jourdy's finished painting of the same composition, in the collection of the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris [RM06942].

Jourdy's oeuvre, consisting largely of dramatic history scenes, reveals the influence of Neo-Classical painters Guillaume Guillon-Lethière (1760-1832) and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867), under whom Jourdy studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Indeed, the present composition exhibits a clear debt to Lethière's painting of the same subject, in the collection of Nottingham Castle [NCM 1884-1].

The handling of the present work recalls another oil sketch by Jourdy for the Church of Saint Elizabeth, now hanging in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville, Paris [PPP4722].
