Lot 274

Description

Georges Kars,
Czech 1880/82-1945-

Three figures, standing full-length, wearing head coverings;

oil on board, signed 'Kars' (lower left), 39 x 26.5 cm.

Provenance:
Anon. sale, Pillon, Calais, 29 September 2002, lot 238.
Private Collection, France.
with Leighton Fine Art, London;

where purchased by the present owner.

Note:
Kars was an international artist, who studied in Munich under Franz von Stuck (1863-1928), one of the founders of the Munich Secession, before travelling to Spain, where he met Juan Gris (1887-1927), and finally settling in Paris, where he became part of a group of artists now known as the 'School of Paris'. His widely varying oeuvre was undoubtedly influenced by the diversity of these influences, with elements of Cubism and Fauvism often evident in his works, including in the present painting.
