Description

German 1820-1915-

In the Desert, East of Cairo;

pencil and watercolour on paper, signed and dated 'Carl Haag / März 1874' (lower right), inscribed 'In the Desert, East of Cairo.' (lower left), 17.9 x 35.6 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK (by descent).

Note:
Bavarian-born Carl Haag settled in England in the mid 19th century, and established himself as a watercolour artist. He was heavily influenced by his travels to the Middle East, including between 1858-60, during which period he spent a year in Cairo whilst sharing a studio with the artist Frederick Goodall (1822-1904). He visited the Middle East on a number of further occasions, travelling to Egypt in 1873-74 to produce sketches which he then worked up into finished paintings upon his return to England. The present work is one of the drawings from this trip.
