Lot 211
Description
Follower of Thomas Luny,
British 1759-1837-
Entrance to the River Dart;
oil on canvas, signed / bears signature 'Harris' (lower left), 51 x 68.7 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, South Wales (by descent).
Note:
The present work is strongly evocative of the compositions of Thomas Luny and it is likely that this is a direct copy of of one of his oils, by an unknown artist called Harris. Indeed, a smaller painting on panel of the same composition sold, as by Luny, at Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood on 11 June 2017.
It is not inconceivable that the present work is by James Harris of Swansea (1810-1887) as the handling (and of course signature) bear some similarities. A painting, undeniably by the same hand as the present work, was offered at Dreweatts on 14 December 2022, lot 188.
Harris worked in the studio of the marine artist George Chambers Senior, (1803-1840) whilst in London in the mid 1830s, before returning to Swansea in 1836, with much of his work inspired by the city's dramatic coastal landscape. His work reveals a strong debt to Thomas Luny (1759-1837), one of the most influential maritime painters of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
