Lot 178
Description
Edward Calvert,
British 1799-1883-
The Cyder Feast;
original wood engraving, 1828, Lister 7c iii/iii, 8.6 x 13.6 cm.
Provenance:
with Campbell Fine Art.
The collection of the artist Graham Ovenden (1943-2022).
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Alongside Samuel Palmer (1805-1881), Calvert was a central member of the artistic group known as 'The Ancients', who were united by their admiration for William Blake (1757-1827), who died the year before Calvert produced this print in 1828. This composition exhibits a strong debt to Blake, particularly in its pagan imagery, and the evocation of an idyllic and bountiful natural setting.
