Lot 156

Description

Follower of George Henry Harlow,
British 1787-1819-

Portrait of a woman, seated three-quarter length, wearing a brown dress and a white bonnet;

oil on copper, 35.8 x 30.5 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Harlow worked under Samuel Drummond (1766-1844) and in the studio of Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830). His elegant portraits clearly exhibit the influence of Lawrence's approach, particularly in the theatrical red curtains which often surround his sensitively-painted sitters. The present painting is heavily reminiscent of Harlow's portraits, recalling, for example, works which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 30 November 2000, lot 127, and at Christie's, London, on 6 July 2007, lot 127. It also resembles a portrait by Harlow in the collection of the V&A [P.41-1962].
