Description
William Bowness,
British 1809-1867-
Portrait of James Henry Beazley and Jessie Anna Beazley full length in a landscape, collecting flowers in a hat;
oil on canvas, signed, inscribed and dated 'Master James Henry Beazley & / Miss Jessie Anna Beazley / Highfield Oxton / W. Bowness pinxt. 1853. / London.' verso, bears label for J. J. Patrickson & Son, London, attached to the upper stretcher bar, 143 x 117 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Bowness was a poet and artist who enjoyed particular success as a portraitist, exhibiting works at the Royal Academy and the British Institution over the course of his career. He grew up in Kendal, with thirteen of his portraits of Mayors and other prominent individuals of the town now in the collection of the Kendal Town Hall. Other portraits of children by Bowness include his depiction of 'John Guy Webster as a Christ's Hospital Boy' in the collection of Christ's Hospital [165].
The present portrait of these two young siblings, elegantly dressed despite being in a wild and dramatic landscape, is a particularly charming example of Bowness's work.
