Description
William Daniell, RA,
British 1769-1837-
View of a landscape with cattle by a river, and a country house in the distance;
oil on canvas, excise duty stamp on original unlined canvas '... 26 177' verso, 46.8 x 62.2 cm.
Exhibited:
[Probably] London, Royal Academy of Arts, 'The Forty-Sixth Exhibition of the Royal Academy', 1814, no.262 ('Landscape and cattle').
Note:
The present work is characteristic of William Daniell's handling and is a particularly charming, sunny example of his oeuvre.
The artist is perhaps best-known for his Indian landscapes, informed by his travels across the subcontinent with his uncle Thomas Daniell (1749-1840), with whom he collaborated on the production of a series of illustrations for the publication 'Oriental Scenery' (1812). Nevertheless, Daniell also depicted the English landscape, including in watercolours, which he reproduced for his survey of the British coastline entitled 'A Voyage Round Great Britain', issued in eight volumes between 1814 and 1825. Similarly striking views of the British countryside include Daniell's paintings which sold recently at Dreweatts on 2 March 2023, lot 66 (£15,000), and on 6 November 2022, lot 59 (£27,000 hammer).
