Lot 148

Description

Julius Caesar Ibbetson,
British 1759-1817-

Travellers beside a country inn;

oil on canvas, 41 x 58.6 cm. (unframed).

Provenance:
Anon. sale, Bonhams, Chester, 11 March 2009, lot 603.

Note:
Ibbetson was initially apprenticed to a ship painter in Hull where he also worked as a theatre scene painter, before moving to London in 1777. A self-taught artist, he worked across Britain and frequently exhibited landscape and genre scenes at the Royal Academy. Celebrated for his depictions of the rural English landscape, Ibbetson's style exhibits a clear debt to the Dutch masters of the 17th century, with Benjamin West (1738-1820) describing him as 'the Berchem of England'.  Indeed, in this manner, the present work shows Ibbetson's amalgamation of Dutch rustic subject matter with the warm light usually present in Italianate landscapes, with the building and terrain suggesting an English setting. These picturesque views became incredibly popular towards the end of the 18th Century and resulted in many commissions for Ibbetson as well as for contemporaries such as George Morland (1763-1804) and Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797).

The present work recalls a similar, slightly smaller painting by Ibbetson which sold at Roseberys on 20 July 2021, lot 62 (£2,470), and his oil which sold at Christie's, London, on 21 November 2019, lot 36 (£4,750).
