Lot 144
Description
Joseph August Knip,
Dutch 1777-1847-
Animal Stables in Rosny-sur-Seine;
oil on canvas, signed, inscribed and dated 'A ROSNY SUR SEINE / KNIP. / 1825.' (centre left), 71.6 x 89.4 cm.
Provenance:
Anon. sale, Dorotheum, Graz, 2 December 2010, lot 52 (€3,750).
Note:
Another version - of the same dimensions - of the oil painting by Knip housed in the Bavarian State Painting Collections – Neue Pinakothek Munich [no.14481].
Knip was part of an artistic family, as the son of the decorative painter Nikolaas Frederick Knip (1741-1808) and brother of Henriëtte Geertruida Knip (1783-1842). He married the artist Pauline Rifer de Courcelles (1781-1851), whose daughter, Henriëtte Ronner-Knip (1821-1909), also went on to become a prominent animal painter. The present work is a particularly striking example of the artist's oeuvre and recalls another (somewhat less lively) composition which sold at Christie's, Amsterdam, on 23 October 2002, lot 15 (€7,000 hammer).
