Description
Sir George Howland Beaumont,
British 1730-1827-
Matlock, September 1790;
pencil, grey ink and wash on paper, 20 x 25.3 cm.
Provenance:
Acquired from Henrietta, the wife of Sir George Francis Beaumont, in September 1979.
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Sir George Beaumont (1753-1827) and his wife were both prominent patrons of the arts, with George Beaumont making the first bequest of paintings to the National Gallery in London, thus making him one of the most influential figures in the institution's establishment. The Beaumonts often visited the Lake District, where they befriended William Wordsworth (1770-1850), and they later entertained Wordsworth, as well as Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834), Walter Scott (1771-1832), and John Constable (1776-1837), at Coleorton Hall in Leicestershire.
George Beaumont was an amateur artist and was taught drawing by the landscape painter Alexander Cozens (1717-1786).
