Lot 137
Description
Thomas Shotter Boys,
British 1803-1874-
Two watercolours: View of Romanesque building with a tower; and A view of Rouen;
each pencil, pen, ink, and watercolour on paper, the first 43.7 x 34.8 cm., the second 16 x 23 cm., the first signed 'T.S. BOYS' (lower left), two (2).
Provenance:
Anon. sale, Bonhams, London, 18 October 1967, lot 13 (part).
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Shotter Boys was as a prolific watercolourist and engraver, who was heavily influenced by Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-1828). Whilst the 'View of Rouen' is typical of Shotter Boys' often more freely painted landscapes, peopled with diminutive figures - as in another work which sold at Dreweatts on 18 October 2023, lot 104 (£2,600 hammer) - the present view of a Romanesque building is a slightly more unusual work by the artist. The sharper, more defined outlines of this architectural study recall his view of 'The International Exhibition Building, South Kensington', which sold at Christie's, London, on 8 June 2000, lot 191 (£5,875).
