Lot 128
Description
William Payne,
British c.1760-c.1830-
View of a bay, with figures and bathing huts on the beach, and mountains beyond;
pencil and watercolour on paper, inscribed 'William Payne' verso, 15.8 x 25 cm.
Provenance:
with The Swan Gallery, Sherborne.
Private Collection, UK (by descent).
Note:
This coastal landscape is a charming example of Payne's striking and atmospheric watercolours, with the bay illuminated by a bright sunlight which contrasts with the dark form of the cliff and the shadow it casts over the foreground below to the right of the composition.
