Lot 127

Description

George Barrett Junior,
British 1767-1842-

Arcadian landscape with a figure resting by a river, with Classical buildings in the distance;

pencil and watercolour on paper, 50 x 39.2 cm.

Note:
The present work is characteristic of Barrett's sweeping Classical landscapes, themselves heavily influenced by the approach of the artist's father and teacher, George Barrett Senior (c.1730-1784). Barrett Junior was a particularly prolific watercolourist and an early member of the 'Society of Painters in Water Colours', regularly exhibiting with the society from its founding in 1804. A similar composition by Barrett sold at Christie's, London, on 9 June 2005, lot 60 (£2,160), with other romantic Italianate landscapes including a work which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 19 January 2006, lot 15 (£2,160).
