Lot 124

Description

Pierre Lélu,
French 1741-1810-

Susanna and the Elders;

pen, black ink, and brown wash on paper, signed 'P. Lélu' (lower right), 23 x 19 cm.

Provenance:
Galerie Monique Martel, Paris;
Acquired from the above by the previous owner in 1997.
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Lelu was a prolific draughtsman and printmaker who studied under François Boucher (1703-1770) and Gabriel François Doyen (1726-1806). He travelled to Italy in 1762, and again in 1775 and 1789, conceiving copies after the Old Masters he encountered on these trips. The present composition may well have been informed by these experiences, with the subject of Susanna and the Elders particularly popular amongst Italian artists of the 17th and 18th centuries.
