Description
Circle of Pietro Antonio Novelli,
Italian 1729-1804-
The Ascension;
pencil, pen, and brown ink heightened with white on paper laid down on card, bears indistinct inscription 'manonim[?]' (upper right, upside down), bears collector's stamp (lower right), bears later inscription 'Alexander Magnasco' and indistinct stamp to the reverse of the backing card, 24.6 x 16.9 cm.
Provenance:
The Collection of Eugen and Hermione Fenyvesi, Vienna and then London;
Thence by descent;
From whom purchased by the present owner.
Note:
The present work exhibits many of the characteristics which are typical of Novelli's draughtsmanship, including his distinctively confident hatching. This approach is evident, for example, in Novelli's 'Philosopher orating to four onlookers' which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 5 June 2017, lot 50 (£7,500) and in another drawing by Novelli from the same collection of Eugen and Hermione Fenyvesi which sold at Christie's, London, on 5 December 2013, lot 34 (£4,750).
