Lot 122
Description
Johan Baptist Wenzel Bergl,
Austrian 1718-1789-
Christ sleeping in the Garden of Gethsemane;
pencil, pen, and black ink on paper, signed and dated 'Joan Bergl / pixit' (lower right), bears indistinct stamp verso, 21.3 x 16.5 cm., (mounted / unframed).
Provenance:
The Collection of Eugen and Hermione Fenyvesi, Vienna and then London;
Thence by descent;
From whom purchased by the present owner.
Note:
Bergl was a successful decorative artist, who completed a number of commissions for murals for prominent clients including, perhaps most significantly, Empress Maria Theresa (1717-1780), for whom he decorated a number of suites in Schönbrunn Palace, the summer residence of the Habsburg family in Vienna. The present sketch, particularly in the inclusion of ornamental details to the edges of the dramatic scene, illustrates Bergl's skill and experience as a mural painter.
The only other drawing by Bergl to appear on the market was his 'Design for a fresco' which sold at Karl & Faber, Munich, 28 May 2009, lot 484 (€ 2,200 hammer).
