Lot 117

Description

Thomas Rowlandson,
British 1757-1827-

Reading by candlelight;

pen, ink, and watercolour on paper, signed 'T. Rowlandson' (lower left), 24.2 x 19.1 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present work is a characteristic example of Rowlandson's humourous observational sketches, drawn with a typically loose and swirling line which imparts the scene with a sense of spontaneity, as if he has just witnessed the characters which he depicts. The composition recalls a similar watercolour by the artist, entitled 'Beauty and the Beast', which sold at Christie's, London, on 13 February 2025, lot 225 (£5,292).
