Lot 113

Description

Charles Baxter, RBA,
British 1809-1879-

Portrait of a girl, half-length, wearing a headscarf, with her shoulder bare;

oil on canvas, 77 x 67 cm.

Provenance:
The James Harwood Trust, according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame.
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present work is a charming example of Baxter's romanticised portraits of figures, typically dressed in rustic, provincial costume, and often in a rural setting. Indeed, it very much recalls his 'Portrait of a young woman wearing a yellow scarf' which sold at Sotheby's, New York, on 28 January 2005, lot 631 (£4,133), and his 'The Sisters' in the Victoria & Albert Museum [548-1882].
