Description
Circle of Sir Thomas Lawrence, PRA FRS,
British 1769-1830-
Portrait of a diplomat, standing full-length, wearing a chain of office, holding a sword and keys, and resting his hand on a red box;
oil on panel, 45.5 x 30.2 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work very much resembles Lawrence's stately full-length portraits, adorned in the robes of state, and often with dramatic stormy skies, or the artist's characteristic red drapery, visible behind them. Indeed, this portrait, for example, recalls Lawrence's portrait of Charles Gardiner which sold at Christie's, New York, on 31 January 2024, lot 195, and his portrait of Thomas Dawson, which sold at Sotheby's, New York, on 28 January 2022, lot 422.
