Lot 114
Description
Sir Thomas Lawrence, PRA FRS,
British 1769-1830-
Portrait of Henry Hakewill, architect, half-length, wearing a black coat and white stock;
oil on canvas, bears old label inscribed 'Henry Hakewill 1771-1830 / Court Architect, / Sir Thomas Lawrence' attached to the central stretcher bar, 76.6 x 63.5 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, Aberdeen, until 2010.
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work is a particularly fine example of Lawrence's stately portraits of dignified sitters.. It recalls, for example, Lawrence's portrait of an unidentified gentleman which sold at Woolley & Wallis on 12 August 2021, lot 641 (£15,000 hammer), and his portrait of 'Sir Codrington Edmund Carrington' in the Victoria & Albert Museum [no.1359-1874].
Henry Hakewill was a prominent architect, who studied at the Royal Academy and under John Yenn (1750-1821). He was appointed architect to Rugby School in 1809, and went on to design many of the school's Gothic buildings, and chapel. He also completed commissions for the Radcliffe Trustees in Oxford, the Middle Temple in London, as well as designing St Peter's Church in Eaton Square, which was first built in 1824-27, and, after being destroyed by fire, was rebuilt using Hakewill's drawings by one of his sons in 1837.
