Description
Auguste Joseph Carrier,
French 1797/1800-1875-
Portrait of a lady, traditionally identified as Madame Joubert, seated half-length, wearing a white dress with a blue ribbon, and a brown fur shawl;
watercolour on ivory, oval, signed and indistinctly dated 'Carrier 18...' (right edge), 10.5 x 9 cm. Ivory submission reference: EJWX6GQK.
Provenance:
The collection of the sculptor Felix Joubert (1872-1953), and thence by descent.
Note:
Carrier studied under Pierre-Paul Prud'hon (1758-1823) and Baron Gros (1771-1835). Carrier worked largely as a sculptor and also produced a number of delicately-painted portrait miniatures of elegant sitters, including a strikingly similar portrait to the present work of a lady which sold at Artcurial, Paris, on 27 November 2024, lot 163 (€1,837).

Qualifying living artists and the descendants of artists deceased within the last 70 years are entitled to receive a re-sale royalty each time their work is bought through an auction house or art market professional.
It applies to lots with hammer value over £1,000 as follows:
0 to £50,000 - 4%
£50,000.01 to £200,000 - 3%
£200,000.01 to £350,000 - 1%
£350,000.01 to £500,000 - 0.5%
Exceeding £500,000 - 0.25%
ARR is capped at £12,500

Export of goods
