Lot 102

Description

George Romney, RA,
British 1724-1802-

Portrait of John Coulthurst (1760-1816), half-length, seated, in a dark brown coat, white stock, and white waistcoat;

oil on canvas, 77 x 63.5 cm.

Provenance:
J.A. Farrer, Ingleborough, Yorkshire, by 1904;
Thereafter stayed in the Farrer Family (Hung at the offices of Farrer & Co., 66 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London).

Literature:
H. Ward and W. Roberts, 'Romney, A Biographical and Critical Essay with a Catalogue Raisonné of his Works', London, 1904, II, p.34.
A. Kidson, 'George Romney, A Complete Catalogue of his Paintings', New Haven and London, 2015, I, p.150, no.295, illustrated.

Note:
John Coulthurst was the second son and heir of Nicholas Coulthurst of Gargrave, Yorks and his wife Arabella. He was born in Chancery Lane, London, where the Coulthurst family had their Solicitors Office, and was educated at Peterhouse, Cambridge. The Coulthurst family were neighbours of the Farrers in Yorkshire. After the last Coulthurst in the firm died or retired, Oliver Farrer (see lot 103) took over. The Coulthurst family remained clients for many generations.

Painted in 1785-1786, the sitter book for 1785 is lost, but Mr Coulthurst paid Romney's fee of 20 guineas in full on 24 June that year. A final sitting was given on 25th May 1786.
