Description
Cuzco School,
late 19th / 20th century-
Five works, including: Arquebusier Angel; Archangel Saint Raphael; Archangel Michael; Archangel Gabriel; and Saint Rose of Lima;
the first oil on canvas, the other four oil on canvas on panel, the first signed and inscribed '"ARCABUSERO" / E Navarro A' (lower right), the second inscribed 'Arcangel / San / Rafael' (lower right), the fourth inscribed 'Arcangel / Gabriel' (lower left), the first 70 x 50 cm., the others 40.5 x 30 cm., five (5).
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present works depict popular subjects amongst Cuzco school artists, principally active in 17th-century South America. These include the distinctive 'Ángel arcabucero', which is an angel with an early firearm known as an arquebus, often dressed in elaborate clothing inspired by that of the Andean aristocracy in the late 17th century. Also illustrated are Archangel Raphael - most often depicted in the scene of 'Tobias and the Angel', and thus typically represented holding a fish - and Archangel Michael, who is identified by his armour, the sword which he wields, and the scales he holds, which are used to weigh the souls of the departed. Archangel Gabriel is depicted holding a cornucopia of flowers as a symbol of abundance, which is specific to the Cuzco School tradition. Saint Rose of Lima (1586-1617) was the first person from the Americas to be canonised as a Catholic saint.
