Lot 78
Description
Attributed to Godfried Maes,
Flemish 1649-1700-
Apollo disguised as a shepherd playing the recorder;
pencil, pen, ink, and brown wash on paper, indistinctly right (lower left), 27.5 x 32.8 cm., (unframed).
Note:
The present work dates to the end of Maes's career and looks to be a characteristic example of his drawings of mythological and Biblical scenes, executed 'en grisailles'. Indeed, the subject of Ovidius (Apollo disguised as a shepherd playing the recorder) is typical of the mythological subjects so dear to Godfried Maes.
Here, Maes's detailed handling of the central figures and the fabric which drapes around them contrasts effectively with the looser brushstrokes of the foliage towards the background. This same approach can be seen in a number of the artist's works, including in his illustration from Ovid's 'Metamorphoses' in the British Museum [1997,0118.1]; in his depiction of 'Apollon et amour' which was offered at Christie's, Paris, on 18 May 2022, lot 28; and in his drawing which sold at Sotheby's, New York, on 31 January 2018, lot 319.
We are grateful to Dr Jean-Pierre de Bruyn for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
