Description
Circle of Carlo Maratta,
Italian 1625-1713-
Study of a woman holding an instrument, with a figure above;
black and sanguine chalk heightened with touches of white chalk on paper, bears collector's stamp for Joshua Reynolds [L.2364] (lower left), 35.3 x 23.1 cm., (mounted / unframed).
Provenance:
The collection of Sir Joshua Reynolds, PRA (1723-1792).
Note:
The present work recalls Maratta's energetic figure studies, with an effective sense of solidity and depth conveyed by the gentle shading of the figures, contrasted with the highlighting of some areas. This handling recalls Maratta's study of 'The infant Romulus' which sold at Christie's, New York, on 22 January 2004, lot 45, and his 'Studies for the figure of Christ' which sold at Sotheby's, New York, on 25 January 2012, lot 61. Indeed, many similar drawings by Maratta were found in Reynolds's collection, including his 'Heads of four putti' [BM 1872,1012.3295], and his 'Study for a figure of St John the Evangelist' [BM 1938,0611.7].
As well as being the pre-eminent portrait painter of the 18th century, Reynolds was also a prominent and highly discerning collector of Old Master drawings, a habit which was likely informed by his travels to Italy early on in his artistic career.
