Lot 79
Description
Attributed to Cornelis Bol, after Jan van Goyen,
Flemish 1589-1666 and Dutch 1596-1656-
Landscape with the ruined church of Muiderberg;
black chalk, grey ink, and grey wash on laid paper without watermark, signed with initials 'C.B' (lower left), with anonymous collector's ink stamp 'BL' verso, 11.1 x 18.8 cm.
Provenance:
The collection of E.J. Otto, Berlin [L873b].
with The Brod Gallery, London.
Exhibited:
Alfred Brod Gallery, London, 'Old Master Drawings', 28 January 1965 - 20 February 1965, no.106.
Literature:
Gerson 403/4 as 'after Van Goyen'.
Note:
Bol is sometimes known as 'Cornelis Bol IV' to differentiate him from another Flemish artist active in England, variously referred to as 'Cornelis Bol I' or 'Cornelis Boel' (c.1576-c.1621). Cornelis Bol is perhaps best known for his views of the Thames commissioned by John Evelyn (1620-1706), one of which is in the collection of the Dulwich Picture Gallery [DPG360].
The present sheet is recorded on the RKD - Netherlands Institute for Art History database [no.262537]. The van Goyen drawing that it is after is located in the Kupferstichkabinett der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin, Berlin [inv./cat.nr 12260]. Bol's works in general, and his drawings in particular, very rarely come to the market, making the present sketch a scarce and important example of the artist's output.
