Lot 73
Description
Follower of Giovanni Guerra,
Italian 1544-1618-
A Classical battle scene;
pen, brown ink, and brown wash on paper, 19 x 30 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present drawing recalls Guerra's approach, particularly in its formal, frieze-like composition, and in the artist's generous use of wash to add depth to a clear outline in pen and ink. Indeed, Guerra was known to have produced frescoes himself, completing a range of commissions, from those for the more modest Palazzetto Cenci in 1653, to the staircase connecting the Sistine Chapel with St Peter's Basilica, a project he undertook with contemporary Cesare Nebbia (c.1536-c.1614). A similar approach to the present work is evident in drawings by Guerra which sold at Sotheby's, Milan, on 26 June 2007, lot 10, and at Sotheby's, London, on 11 July 2001, lot 149.
