Lot 68
Description
Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn,
Dutch 1606-1669-
The Stoning of St Stephen;
etching, signed and dated 'Rembrandt f 1635' (within the plate, lower left), bears inscription 'Rembrandt' verso, 9.8 x 8.6 cm., (unframed).
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work depicts the martyrdom of St Stephen, considered to be the 'first Christian martyr', in the first century AD. The composition is a later reworking by Rembrandt of his painting of the same subject, the artist's first signed work, which was produced in 1625 when he was aged 19, and which hangs at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon.
This print exhibits the masterful use of chiaroscuro which characterises Rembrandt's etchings, with Stephen's form squarely illuminated by a strong ray of light emanating from above.
